Tasty water, small tank for 3+ people

"The device works great; the water tastes like it's fresh from the mountains. It's louder than what I expected but still not too loud – I can barely hear it behind the closed door. This is the first water filter I ever tried using at home, and I find it a little annoying to always have to change the back water tank: away with the wastewater and in with the new. If I were buying again, I would probably opt for an 'on the tap' filter. I live with one person, but if we have people over, we need to refill the back tank many times per day."

Happy but not satisfied

"I am a researcher by profession, so forgive the extra-long review style. I was dangling between a 3 and a 4 star but I went with 4 because the product works as promised I am just not happy with the complete package. I have been using the AquaTru Carafe with the Mineral Boost filter, and overall, my experience has been positive. The filter works well, and I genuinely like the taste of the water with the mineral boost version. The water tastes clean and pleasant, and based on my experience, I can recommend the product for people who want better-tasting filtered drinking water. I also came to believe in the purity it promises through the several certifications I read through, and that the Independent testing has also rated the AquaTru Carafe highly for contaminant reduction and noted that the purified water is collected in a glass carafe, which is a good design choice for the part that actually holds the clean water (WaterFilterGuru, 2025). However, there are a few issues that stop me from fully backing the product without reservation. My biggest concern is hard water and limescale. AquaTru’s support information states that the system is intended for water hardness below 10 grains per gallon, and that harder water can cause limescale to build up on the reverse osmosis membrane, increase filter run time, and require more frequent descaling or filter replacement (AquaTru, 2025a). This is an important point because hard water is a common problem in many places. For a company selling a water filter in many areas where hard water and calc problems are common, I think this should be treated as a core design issue rather than just a maintenance issue left to the customer. I would really like AquaTru to look closely at how many customers live in hard-water areas and consider offering an additional water-softening filter or pre-filter as part of the filtration process. Many devices do not reach their full quality or lifespan when scale builds up inside them. I do not want this to feel like planned obsolescence, because the core filtration system is good, but without a stronger hard-water solution, it can feel as if customers in hard-water areas are being pushed toward extra maintenance and earlier filter replacement. My second major suggestion is to add a clearer reminder or sensor for scale buildup. AquaTru already explains that slow filtration or stopping during filtration can be caused by scale buildup, and that users should descale when filtering slows significantly (AquaTru, 2025b). That is useful information, but it depends on the user noticing the slowdown and remembering to act on it. A reminder light, app alert, or simple flow-time sensor would make the product easier to maintain and help customers use the descaling kit before performance has already dropped too much. My other relatively smaller criticism is about the build. I understand that plastic is practical and cost-effective, and I appreciate that the clean water carafe is glass. Still, the main body feels quite plastic for a product at this price. Furthermore, the wastewater tank fits oddly in the back, with a visible gap between the equipment and the tank; it just doesn't feel well-made. WaterFilterGuru also notes that the system is not entirely plastic-free because the main unit containing the filters is made from Tritan plastic (WaterFilterGuru, 2025). This is not a deal breaker, but at a premium price, I expected the product to feel a little more premium in daily use. In summary, I like the AquaTru Carafe, and I especially like the taste of the Mineral Boost version. I think the filtration concept is strong, and I would recommend it, but my recommendation comes with reservations. Please consider adding a proper hard water solution, such as an optional softening stage, and at least a clear descaling reminder or sensor. Those two improvements would make the product much easier to trust long-term, especially for customers in areas with serious limescale problems. I am looking to invest more in the filtration system and, therefore, have a vested interest in this product. I hope this review finds itself with someone who cares.
