How do AquaTru waterfilters work?

AquaTru products use a unique, patented 4-phase technology. The water goes through several filters that remove impurities, so you get clean, safe water, every time.

  • In phase 1, the water passes through a mechanical filter. Large particles, such as limescale and rust, are removed from the water.
  • In phase 2, the pre-filter removes substances such as chlorine and chloramine.
  • In phase 3, the water is silently pressed through the reverse osmosis membrane, under high pressure. This membrane filters even the most complex harmful substances, such as chemicals, medicine residues microplastics and metals from the water.
  • Finally, the water in phase 4 passes through an activated coconutfibre carbon filter. This filter gives the water a delicious, pure taste.

What contaminants do AquaTru waterfilters remove?

AquaTru removes up to 99% of all harmful substances from your tapwater, including: heavy metals, chemicals (e.g. PFAS), drug residues, pesticides (e.g. Roundup) and microplastics. AquaTru has been independently tested and certified by IAPMO to NSF/ANSI Standards 42, 53, 58, and 401 for the reduction of a wide range of contaminants. For a complete list of substances, please visit our "Why AquaTru" page.

What makes AquaTru different from other waterfilters?

What truly sets AquaTru apart from many other waterfilters is its combination of advanced filtration technologies and its proven, independently certified performance.
Most conventional waterfilters—especially those found in pitchers or basic countertop systems—rely on just one method: activated carbon filtration. While this method can improve the taste and smell of tapwater by removing chlorine and a few other substances, it does little to address many other harmful contaminants. The effectiveness of such filters varies greatly depending on the quality of the carbon used, and in many cases, they don’t remove much more than chlorine.

AquaTru, by contrast, uses a multi-stage filtration system that includes one of the highest quality carbon filters available, combined with a powerful Reverse Osmosis (RO) membrane. This combination allows AquaTru to remove a far broader range of contaminants—including those that carbon filters alone cannot handle, such as fluoride, heavy metals, industrial chemicals, drug residues, and microplastics.

While other systems may also combine carbon filtration and reverse osmosis, AquaTru goes a step further by offering transparency and proof of performance. The system has been independently tested and certified by IAPMO (International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials), one of the most respected global organizations for water safety and product performance. AquaTru has been tested according to the NSF/ANSI standards 42, 53, 58, and 401, which cover a wide range of contaminants. According to these tests, up to 99% of harmful substances are removed from your drinking water with AquaTru.

In addition to its powerful filtration capabilities, AquaTru is also designed for convenience and ease of use—making it accessible for everyday households.

For a full list of the contaminants AquaTru removes and detailed test results, we invite you to visit our “Why AquaTru” page.

Is AquaTru a reverse osmosis system?

Yes, AquaTru is a reverse osmosis system. It uses a patented 4-phase technology that removes a wide range of contaminants while providing high-quality water at home.

What is the difference between the standard AquaTru waterfilter and the Alkaline version?

The only difference is the VOC filter. With the Alkaline unit you receive an Alkaline VOC filter that adds minerals (including calcium, potassium, magnesium and sodium) to the filtered water. The standard VOC filter in AquaTru does not add minerals.
AquaTru water is close to pH neutral, around 7.0 on the pH scale and Alkaline is defined as having a pH above 7. AquaTru’s Alkaline VOC filter will raise the pH above 7 throughout the life of the filter.

If you love the mineral-rich taste of water (similar to brands like Evian or Arrowhead), the Alkaline version is just the one for you. It creates alkaline water and adds healthy minerals like calcium and magnesium to quench your thirst.
However, if you prefer the fresh, mineral-free taste of water (similar to brands like Aquafina or SmartWater), we think you will love our standard AquaTru devices with a regular VOC filter.

What is the lifespan of the AquaTru unit?

The lifespan of an AquaTru unit typically ranges between 5 to 10 years. However, this can vary depending on several factors such as how often the unit is used, the quality and hardness of your tap water, how well the unit is maintained, and whether filters are replaced on time. With proper care and regular maintenance, your AquaTru can serve you reliably for many years. Please note that this is an estimate, not a guaranteed timeframe.

What materials are the watertanks made of?

AquaTru’s watertanks are made of Tritan® plastic, which is a high quality plastic. It is BPA and BPS-free. If you prefer glass, the AquaTru Carafe features a borosilicate glass tank.

Where is AquaTru made?

AquaTru is designed in the USA and assembled in China using high-quality components from around the world. Our filters come from trusted manufacturers, including reputable sources in India and GE for the RO membrane. Each batch of filters is tested to ensure it meets our performance and quality standards.

Is Tritan® plastic safe?

Yes, Tritan® plastic is completely safe. It’s a high-quality, food-grade material that’s been rigorously tested by universities and independent labs. It’s free from BPA, BPS and other harmful chemicals, and has been proven to have no estrogenic or androgenic activity.

Does the AquaTru unit come with filters and watertanks included?

Yes, the AquaTru unit comes as a complete set, including the filters and watertanks. It contains everything you need to start filtering your own pure water.

How quickly does the AquaTru filter?

The filtration time depends on the AquaTru model. Here’s a quick overview:

  • AquaTru Classic: Takes about 12–15 minutes to filter a full tank.
  • AquaTru Carafe: Takes around 10–15 minutes for a full tank.
  • AquaTru Under Sink: The tank refills instantly when water is tapped. To completely refill an empty storage tank, it usually takes 2–3 hours.

Please note that actual filtration time may vary slightly depending on your local water quality.

How much filtered water can AquaTru hold?

Each AquaTru model holds a different amount of filtered water:

  • AquaTru Classic: 2.7 litres
  • AquaTru Carafe: 1.9 litres
  • AquaTru Under Sink: 7.0 litres

This refers to the capacity of the filtered watertank in each system.

Is the AquaTru Connect version available in Europe?

No, we don’t sell the AquaTru Connect in Europe, and we have no plans to do so in the future. This has to do with GDPR regulations. Data needs to be stored in a European cloud. This is technically not possible at the moment.

What is the difference between Perfect Minerals and the Alkaline VOC filter?

Perfect Minerals are sourced from the Great Salt Lake in Utah and contain over 72 ionic minerals and trace elements. These minerals are 8-10 times more concentrated than seawater, matching the proportions of healthy human fluids. The mineral drops contain:

  • Magnesium: 200 mg (48% DV)
  • Chloride: 568 mg (25% DV)
  • Sodium: 7.4 mg (<1% DV)
  • Potassium: 3.0 mg (<1% DV)
  • Sulfate: 44 mg (DV not established)

It also contains 79 trace minerals, but their amounts are too small to be assigned a daily percentage value.

The mineral drops raise the pH of tapwater by 0.5 to 1 pH, depending on water quality.

AquaTru’s pH + Mineral Boost Alkaline Carbon filter adds minerals like calcium, potassium, magnesium, and sodium, which naturally increase water alkalinity. The filter's average mineral release is:

  • Potassium: 1 mg/l
  • Magnesium: 20 mg/l
  • Calcium: 0.5 mg/l
  • Sodium: 0 mg/l
  • Bicarbonate: 3 mg/l

The filter maintains an alkaline pH (>7) throughout its life and removes the same contaminants as the standard VOC filter.

How should I dispose used filters?

Used filters can be disposed with your regular residual waste. You may also check with your local waste or recycling facility, some centres may be able to assist in recycling certain components.

Troubleshooting & Support

My AquaTru Classic does not work after cleaning. What should I do?

If your AquaTru Classic device stops working after installation or cleaning, it could be due to soap or water bubbles covering the sensors in the filtered watertank's handle. These bubbles 'make the unit think' the tank is full. To fix this, fill the tank with water until it overflows into the sink. Discard the water, shake the tank well, and let it air dry without the lid for a while. Once the bubbles are gone and the tank is correctly positioned on the base, your AquaTru should work again.

What do I do if my AquaTru has no power or shows nothing on the screen?

If your AquaTru has no power or shows nothing on the screen, try these steps:

  • Make sure the power adapter is firmly plugged in on a working outlet.
  • Check if both watertanks are installed properly.
  • For AquaTru Classic: check if the side panel is fully closed and flush with the control panel.
  • For AquaTru Carafe: check if the floats in both watertanks are moving freely.

Why is my AquaTru filtering slowly or stopping during filtration?

If your AquaTru is filtering very slowly or has stopped during the filtration process, it’s likely that the tube which transports water from the tapwatertank to the first filter is (partially) clogged with limescale.

To resolve this issue and restore your AquaTru to optimal performance, we recommend descaling the device.

Descaling should effectively resolve the issue. If the problem persists after descaling, feel free to reach out to our customer service team at info@aquatru.eu, we’re here to help!

What should I do if my AquaTru tapwatertank is leaking?

If the tapwatertank leaks from a valve when removed, it may be caused by limescale buildup. Follow these steps:

  1. Remove and empty the tapwatertank from the base.
  2. Turn the tank upside down and fill the valve holes with cleaning vinegar.
  3. Let it soak for about 30 minutes, then shake out the vinegar.
  4. Turn the tank right side up, fill it with a layer of cleaning vinegar, and leave it for another 30 minutes.
  5. Press the valves above the sink to drain the vinegar.
  6. Finally, wash the tank thoroughly with soap and water. Use a toothbrush to clean the valves if needed.

Following these steps should help resolve the leaking.

The filtered water with the Alkaline VOC filter tastes like fish/sulphur. How is this possible?

The Alkaline VOC filter can initially give the water a strong flavour due to the added minerals. Some people describe this as fishy or sulphur-like. This is completely harmless and usually fades after filtering 10–20 tanks of water.

Taste perception is very personal – while most people enjoy the mineral taste, others may be more sensitive to certain flavours. It’s a bit like how some people love the herb coriander and describe it as fresh and citrusy, while others find it tastes soapy – it all depends on your individual biochemistry.

The water becomes cloudy or white during filtering. Is this a problem?

No, this is nothing to worry about. The cloudiness – often referred to as the "white cloud" – is caused by tiny microbubbles of air that come up when air passes through the RO membrane.

Some AquaTru units experience this only during the first few tanks, while others may see it more regularly. It’s completely harmless and does not affect the quality or safety of the filtered water.

Usage & Best Practises

What do I do with my AquaTru when I go on vacation?

Before going on vacation, filter one full tank of filtered water. This saturates the filters so no hard water remains inside. When you return, wash the watertanks and filter two tanks before drinking the filtered water again.

If you are away for more than two months, descale your AquaTru first. Then, turn it upside down to remove any remaining water and store it without the filters and watertanks.

Please note that all filters should be replaced after two months of inactivity.

What should I do after returning from vacation?

After vacation, wash your watertanks and filter two tanks before drinking the filtered water again.

Can I use AquaTru if my water hardness is above 171 mg/L?

Our manual recommends using AquaTru with water hardness up to 171 mg/L (approximately 9.5 °dH). However, you can still use AquaTru if your tapwater is a bit harder.

To keep your device performing optimally and protect it from limescale build-up, we recommend descaling your AquaTru monthly using our descaling kit.

If your water is significantly harder, using a water softener beforehand can also help reduce limescale and extend the lifespan of your filters. Particularly the RO filter, which may need replacing more frequently in hard water areas.

And do keep in mind: if your RO-filter needs replacing a bit sooner, that’s actually a good sign, it means it’s doing exactly what it should, capturing all the unwanted substances from your water before you drink it.

How do I clean the AquaTru tanks, and are the tanks dishwasher safe?

For the AquaTru Classic, both watertanks are not dishwasher safe and should be cleaned by hand.

For the AquaTru Carafe, the tapwatertank is not dishwasher safe and needs to be cleaned by hand as well. However, the glass carafe (without the lid) is dishwasher safe.

We recommend washing both tanks by hand weekly with soap and water. Over time, limescale can build up in your tapwatertank, and a white line may appear. The amount of time this takes depends on the hardness of your tapwater.

To keep your tapwatertank in optimal condition, we advise descaling it at least once a month. To do this, fill the tank with warm water (just above the white line) and add 100 ml of kitchen vinegar. Let it soak for about 30 minutes, then wipe the limescale away with a cloth or soft sponge.

How frequently should I descale my AquaTru Classic or Carafe, and why is it important?

Regular descaling is crucial for maintaining your AquaTru Classic or AquaTru Carafe, as it helps prevent mineral accumulation and ensures your device operates efficiently. Typically, descaling should be carried out every six months under standard water conditions.

If your tapwater has a hardness level above 171 mg/L (9.5°dH), it is important to descale monthly using the AquaTru descaling kit. Consistent descaling not only prolongs the lifespan of your filters but also guarantees the best possible filtration performance.

For areas with significantly higher water hardness, using a water softener before filtration can help reduce excessive limescale buildup and enhance system efficiency.

How do I prevent green algae in my AquaTru?

To prevent algae growth in your AquaTru, follow these helpful tips:

  1. Do not place the AquaTru in direct sunlight or close to a heat source. Heat and sun act as a catalyst for algae growth.
  2. Do not let the water sit in the tank for several days, unused (one or two days is not a problem).
  3. After washing the tanks, we recommend that you dry the tanks with a clean paper towel on the outside of the tank and place them on the base.
  4. Before placing the tanks on the base, wipe the surface where the tank sits with a dry clean cloth.
  5. Always maintain sanitised working surfaces and hands when handling the tanks.

How much residual water does AquaTru produce?

The amount of residual water produced by AquaTru varies depending on the device:

  • AquaTru Classic: 75% efficiency
  • AquaTru Carafe: 63% efficiency
  • AquaTru Under Sink: 25% efficiency

Efficiency refers to the percentage of influent water that is available to the user as reverse osmosis-treated water under typical operating conditions.

Important: To prevent clogging, it is essential to discard the residual water from the tapwatertank every time before refilling. This water contains harmful substances and excess lime, which could lead to clogging if filtered repeatedly. Additionally, failing to discard residual water will void your warranty.

Can I filter well water, river water, lake water, or rainwater with AquaTru?

No, AquaTru is not recommended for filtering well water, river water, lake water, or rainwater, as it is designed for use with bacteriologically safe tapwater. While it might remove contaminants from these water sources, AquaTru is not tested or designed for natural water sources.

Filtering unsafe or untreated water without proper pre-filtration or disinfection can potentially cause contamination, damage the device, and void the warranty. For these types of water, we advise using a suitable pre-filtration and disinfection system before using AquaTru.

Health & Safety

Does reverse osmosis filtration remove the minerals as well?

Yes, reverse osmosis filtration removes some minerals along with contaminants. However, the amount of minerals in tapwater is very low, and you get most of your essential minerals from your diet. If you want your water to be mineralised we recommend our Perferct Minerals or our pH+ Mineral Boost Alkaline VOC filter.

What is the difference between the AquaTru and the Alkaline AquaTru?

The difference between the two devices lies in the VOC filter. The Alkaline AquaTru includes a VOC filter that adds minerals (such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, and sodium) to the filtered water, while the standard AquaTru’s VOC filter does not. AquaTru water is close to neutral, around a 7.0 pH, while the Alkaline AquaTru raises the pH above 7, creating alkaline water.

If you love the mineral-rich taste of water (similar to brands like Evian or Arrowhead) and the health benefits of alkaline water, the Alkaline AquaTru is the ideal choice. It adds minerals like calcium and magnesium to hydrate and nourish your body.

Note: If you prefer the clean, mineral-free taste of water (like Aquafina or SmartWater), the regular AquaTru with the standard VOC Carbon Filter may be a better fit for you.

How do I remineralise the filtered water?

Reverse osmosis filtration removes some minerals that are beneficial in certain amounts. However, the amount of minerals in tapwater is negligible, and you can get all the minerals you need from your food.

AquaTru water is close to neutral, around 7.0 on the pH scale. If you would like to remineralize your filtered water, we offer two options:

  • AquaTru Perfect Minerals: These come from the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Its nutrient-rich waters contain over 72 ionic minerals and trace elements that are 8-10 times more concentrated than regular seawater, in precisely the same proportion as healthy human fluids. AquaTru water is close to neutral, around 7.0 on the pH scale, but the mineral drops will raise the pH by 0.5 to 1, depending on the quality of your tap water.
  • The other option is to use the pH+ Mineral Boost Alkaline VOC filter: If you prefer to have minerals added directly during the filtration process, this filter adds minerals like calcium, potassium, magnesium, and sodium. These minerals naturally increase the alkalinity of the water, raising the pH above 7 throughout the life of the filter.

If you opt for the pH+ Mineral Boost Alkaline VOC filter, it is best to purchase the Alkaline AquaTru complete set, as this filter is included. The standard AquaTru complete set contains the regular VOC filter.

What minerals are in AquaTru Perfect Minerals?

AquaTru Perfect Minerals are sourced from Utah’s Great Salt Lake and contain more than 72 trace minerals. These minerals are 8 to 10 times more concentrated than those found in regular seawater.

  • Perfect Minerals – Serving size of 2 millilitres
  • Magnesium: 200 mg (48% of daily value)
  • Chloride: 568 mg (25% of daily value)
  • Sodium: 7.4 mg (<1% of daily value)
  • Potassium: 3.0 mg (<1% of daily value)
  • Sulfate: 44 mg (daily value not established)

It also contains 79 trace minerals, but their amounts are too small to determine a daily value percentage.

Are the materials BPA-free?

Yes, the entire AquaTru unit is tested to be BPA-free. This is part of the certification process to NSF/ANSI standards by IAPMO, which ensures all parts are safe for water contact.

For example, the filters go through extraction testing to confirm they do not release any toxins into the water. This testing follows NSF standards and ensures compliance with both FDA limits and the strict California Prop 65 standard.

One or more of my filters is not vacuum-packed. Is that a problem?

No, it's not a problem. As long as the plastic packaging of the filter(s) is not open, the filter remains intact and can be safely used.
